Company Description:
Our purpose is to build environments where our clients, employee-owners and communities prosper. Sundt is modern, innovative and 100% employee-owned. We build projects in a collaborative environment, using techniques to improve productivity, reduce costs and deliver successful projects. In 2016 it was named the nation’s safest construction company by the Associated General Contractors of America for the second time in a decade.
Company History:
Sundt was founded in 1890 by M.M. Sundt, a ship carpenter who immigrated to the U.S. as a teenager. Early projects centered around company headquarters in New Mexico until the 1930s when it relocated to Tucson, Arizona. Our Phoenix office was opened in 1966. In the 1970s, more than 700 projects were completed. In the 1980s and ‘90s, Sundt expanded further, building major mining projects and power plant additions and expanding to California. Expansion to Texas and Utah arrived in the 2000s.
Safety Culture:
Our Safety By Choice program emphasizes the “why” of safety. We provide thorough, state-of-the-art construction safety training and we focus on the reasons employees want and need to stay safe: for families, friends, health, livelihood and the ability to do their favorite activities. By emphasizing good safety choices and recognizing those who make them, our program maintains a positive safety culture while improving our overall safety record, already among the best in the industry.
Company Values:
At Sundt we build and support the communities in which we live and work. We are committed to these communities and our social responsibilities there. The challenges we address in our work range from sustainable water, creating efficient transportation systems, building workplaces to inspire their inhabitants and constructing industrial plants that will take our world into the future. With each project, we are bringing valuable change to our communities.
We strive to bring value to the industry by attracting and supporting new talent. We offer scholarship competitions, sponsor annual engineering school competitions and are supporters of educational organizations and initiatives including Teach for America, Expect More Arizona and technical education programs. Sundt’s Center for Craft Excellence offers training in a number of disciplines, from equipment operator and mechanic to industrial carpentry, pipefitting, ironworking and electrical. It also features programs to help Sundt’s craft employees attain National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Certified Plus status.
The Sundt Foundation was established in 1999 to support the needs of disadvantaged children and adults. The Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, receives most of its funding through employee-owner contributions that are matched by the company. Nearly $8 million in grants have been made to hundreds of nonprofits. The Foundation also hosts the Mike Gaines Charitable Fundraising Events in honor of a former Sundt employee who died from ALS complications. The annual golf tournaments in Tucson, Phoenix, San Diego, Sacramento and San Antonio, and a skeet shoot in Tucson, have raised more than $1.7 million for ALS research.
